Description

The Tullgren Funnel is a pivotal apparatus in the teaching of soil biology within the UK science curriculum. It provides an effective method for extracting and studying small soil-dwelling organisms such as insects, mites, and nematodes. This hands-on device allows students to observe soil biodiversity, understand ecological interactions, and appreciate the complexity of soil ecosystems. How to use: In a typical classroom or laboratory setting, a soil sample is placed on the perforated plate inside the funnel. A 12V, 50W heating lamp, positioned above the soil, generates heat that drives the organisms downwards, away from the light and heat source. These organisms then fall through the funnel into a collecting jar placed below, where they can be examined and studied. Supplied Components:
  • Lamp holder - Securely holds the heating lamp above the soil sample and attaches to a retort rod for stability.
  • 12V, 50W heating lamp bulb - Provides the necessary heat to drive organisms from the soil.
  • Black plastic ring and funnel section - Ensures an efficient and contained setup for the soil sample and the collecting process.
  • Coarse and fine mesh set - Includes meshes with diameters of 2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm to support various soil types and sample sizes, enhancing the versatility of the funnel.
Not Supplied:
  • Glass beaker - Required to collect and observe the organisms that fall through the funnel.
  • Retort stand and rod - Necessary to hold the funnel and lamp setup securely in place.
Additional Requirements:
  • 4mm leads
  • Power supply
With the Tullgren Funnel, educators can effectively engage students in practical scientific inquiry, fostering a deeper understanding of soil ecology and organismal biology.
